Ranger John from Angel Island State Historic Site told shared with STEM Academy 8th graders the story of Chinese and other immigrants who arrived in San Francisco from 1910 to 1940. The students were able to see the barracks, poems etched into the walls, and other facilities that were experienced by detainees awaiting approval to enter the United States.

STEM Academy 8th graders learned about how the Bill of Rights impacts the life of everyday people during a video program with the National Archives from Washington, DC. The students learned about how protests and letters to Congress were allowed under the First Amendment, and how a search of a suspect in a gambling case was found to be unlawful under the 4th Amendment. The students also discussed how technology was changing our understanding of our rights.

STEM Academy 8th graders learned about the slave trade during a video conference program with the
in Virginia. The students learned how the slave trade started, read from an autobiography written by a young man kidnapped in Africa and sold into slavery, and how some enslaved people rebelled against their captors.
